Windows 7 on Dell Optiplex 755

Windows 7 on Dell Optiplex 755
So our office upgraded our computer hardware and the hardworking and trustworthy Dell Optiplex 755 used as workstation were given away and now with me at home for personal use.  I would say that this is a real early Christmas bonus for the office.

Below is its basic specification:
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E6550 @ 2.33GHz
RAM: 2GB DDR2
Video: Integrated Intel (GMA) 32MB shared VGA
HDD: 150GB
CD/DVD:  TSST corp. DVD+-RW

It was loaded with windows xp professional SP3 when it was in the office which is good.  However, for home use and for speed factors I upgraded it to windows 7 ultimate 64bit edition. OK, Dell support site said that this particular model do not support windows 7 which disappointed me a little but I still went on and tried it.

The installation is not straight forward but still manageable. However, with the help of internet and some communities, I’ve managed to install windows 7 on my Optiplex 755. So, for you guys that are planning to upgrade your Optiplex 755. Go ahead and read below procedure to eliminate the hassle and guessing game.  Before doing below procedure, make sure that you have all your files backed-up and easily accessible in case something bad happen.

  1. Update the BIOS to version A19 if you have not done it yet. Warning! This will update your BIOS firmware and sometimes confusing so make sure you know what you are doing. Dell support page provides an update tool that will do all the hard work for us.
  2. Install windows 7 like we normally do.
  3. Install “Intel_AMT-HECI_A02_R255437 for Comminication device” patch which is also available on Dell support page by searching the web.
  4. Install “LMS_SOL_v3.2.50.1059 for PCI serial port” patch also available on Dell support page or by searching the web.
  5. Only those 2 device drivers are required for your install and others are automatically taken care of by windows 7.
  6. Install all you needed applications.
  7. Update your Operating System using windows update.
  8. Set up your restore point.
First I thought it will not work, but with some internet research and knowledge I have managed to upgrade my Dell Optiplex 755 to windows 7 64bit and enjoy every second of using it.
